English Language Arts
During middle school, students will be exposed to a wide range of literature and informational texts and tasks. Students will read increasingly complex texts through grades 6–8. Each year in their writing, students will demonstrate increasing sophistication in all aspects of language use, from vocabulary and syntax to the development and organization of ideas as they address increasingly demanding content and sources. Also, throughout middle school, students will demonstrate increasingly sophisticated speaking and listening skills in all aspects of collaboration and media use.

Full implementation of Arizona's College and Career Ready Standards (aka Common Core) began in FUSD during the 2013-2014 school year. Staff continues to refine course delivery to meet the expectations of a rigorous and viable curriculum that encourages students to develop both conceptual and procedural understanding of their grade level math standard by engaging in the eight mathematical practices.

Course description summary:
Math 6 (6th graders only):
In 6th Grade Math there is a strong focus on ratio and proportional relationships which is the foundation for algebra. Equations and inequalities are used to model problems and applied to measurement principles of geometry. The use of the rational number system is extended to include negatives numbers. There is an expectation of fluency in the use of the four major operations with whole numbers, decimals and fractions by the end of the 6th grade year.
Math 6 is open to students in grade 6 only.
Accelerated Math 6/7 (6th graders only):
Accelerated 6/7 Math is the first course in the accelerated middle school mathematics pathway. Students should be prepared to move through and apply concepts at a rapid pace. This course incorporates all of the AZ College and Career Ready Standards-Mathematics (AZCCRS) for grade 6 and half of grade 7. These standards include a deep understanding of the number system, rational number operations, extensive study of rates, ratios and proportional relationships, and equations and inequalities. Appropriate technology and modeling will be used to enhance mathematical understanding, application of concepts and problem solving.
Accelerated Math 6/7 is open to students in grade 6 only.
Prerequisite: Teacher recommendation
Math 7 (7th graders only):
In 7th Grade Math students extend their work with proportional relationships to include constant of proportionality and more complex applications. Understanding, solving and applying linear equations and inequalities is a focus in 7th grade in preparation for the algebra concepts of 8th grade mathematics. Solving problems involving angle measure, area, surface area and volume are used to support fluency with rational numbers.
Math 7 is open to students in grade 7 only.
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Math 6.
Accelerated Math 7/8 (7th graders only):
Accelerated 7/8 is the second course in the accelerated middle school mathematics pathway. This course incorporates the remaining 7th grade AZCCRS (not part of the 6/7 course) and all of the 8th grade standards. These standards include a deep understanding of probability and statistics, application of exponents, the geometry concepts of transformations, congruence and similarity, and the study and application of linear functions and systems. Appropriate technology will be used to enhance mathematical understanding and problem solving skills. Accelerated 7/8 incorporates many of the concepts and skills previously learned in first semester of Algebra 1 and Geometry. The course will move at a rapid pace while still meeting all the standards necessary prior to beginning the redesigned and more rigorous Algebra 1 course in grade 8.
Accelerated Math 7/8 is open to students in grade 7 only.
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Accelerated 6/7 Math or teacher recommendation.
Math 8 (formerly known as Pre-Algebra) (8th graders only):
The 8th grade standards address the foundation of Algebra by including content previously part of the Algebra 1 course, such as a more in-depth study of linear relationships and equations, a more formal treatment of functions and the exploration of irrational numbers. Also, geometry standards which connect algebra and proportional relationships to similarity and congruence are included. Linear modeling is applied through statistical work with scatter plots and bivariate measurement.
Math 8 is open to students in grade 8 only.
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Math 7.
Algebra 1 (8th graders only):
Algebra 1 focuses on the formal definition of functions with particular emphasis on the understanding and application of linear, quadratic and exponential functions. The AZCCRS standards for Algebra 1 also include statistics and modeling as part of this redesigned and more rigorous Algebra 1 course. Appropriate technology will be used to enhance mathematical understanding and problem solving skills. The course will move at a rapid pace.
Prerequisite: Completion of Accelerated Math 7/8 or Math 8.
Algebra 1 is open to students in grades 8, 9, and 10.

7th Grade Curriculum
The 7th grade science curriculum focuses on foundational topics in both Life and Earth Science. In Life Science, students explore food chains, ecosystems, and habitats. In Earth Science, they study plate tectonics, volcanoes, and the formation and classification of rocks and minerals.
8th Grade Curriculum
The 8th grade science curriculum explores key concepts in both Life and Earth Science. In Life Science, students examine the question “What is life?” and delve into topics such as adaptation and heredity. In Earth Science, students investigate matter and energy, Newton’s laws of motion, the periodic table of elements, and chemical reactions.
The Social Studies curriculum at MEMS is based on the Arizona State Standards.
The 7th-grade instruction focuses on geography, while the 8th-grade instruction focuses on history.
A full range of special education services are offered at Mount Elden Middle School. When students enroll in our school they are assigned a case manager who will work to make sure that your student receives all of the support and services that they require.
