Home of the Thunderbirds
Grade level teams:
We are proud to continue our grade-level teams, creating a school-within-a-school feel. We have two teams in each grade, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade, consisting of a red and blue team, reflecting the school colors. Each team will offer honors classes in the four core subjects: ELA, math, social studies, and science.
Grade level hallways:
This year, we have reconfigured our school to create grade-level hallways to reduce the amount of time walking from one end of the building to the other. Students are with grade-level peers. Teaming provides a school-within-a-school feel by creating smaller school communities. Teachers are able to work closely together to provide individual support for students.
We have a wide variety of after-school opportunities in sports and clubs open to all students. Clubs are based on student interests and are sponsored by our teachers.
We invite you to be our guest at Mt. Elden Middle School. Please come and see the great things our students are doing!

At MEMS with responsibility, respect, and kindness as our guiding principles, we seek to empower and inspire all students to become responsible citizens who make a positive difference in their communities.
At Mount Elden Middle School, our mission is to foster an environment of academic excellence, personal growth, and community engagement. We are dedicated to providing a safe and inclusive space where all students can thrive and achieve proficiency in their learning journey.
Student Motto: My Education My Success (M.E.M.S.)
Mount Elden Middle School has six grade level teams, two at each grade level. Each grade level will have two teams, a Blue Team and a Red Team — these are the signature school colors at Mount Elden Middle School. Each team will consist of four core teachers who share the same students. Core teachers are defined as math, English, social studies and science. Students will share these teachers for the school year. Students will rotate off teams for their elective options that provide students with a variety of fine arts, physical education, career, and technology-focused courses. Within the team, the teachers will be able to collaborate on interdisciplinary units, implement universal design for learning framework to meet individual student needs and address intervention and enrichment needs during our T-Bird Time. During off-team time, core teachers are able to meet and discuss student needs, data, curriculum, and strategies for helping students and special populations succeed through the PLC model.
By teaming, we create a “school within a school” model, and therefore create a “smaller” school environment for all students and teachers. Students and teachers on a team become well acquainted and develop strong, respectful, and supportive relationships with teachers and peers. They become a community of people who develop a deep sense of connection and camaraderie. We value family partnerships in supporting your child through these important formative years — the partnership between home and school cannot be understated. The team structure provides a “one- stop” contact for families to communicate with school and their team teachers. This framework fosters a smooth transition from the elementary setting to a high school setting.
One of our objectives is to enhance our school-wide implementation of place-based learning. Placed-based learning focuses on the community around us and will be provided on each team. We believe it is beneficial to our students to be connected to the community and people around them. Students will have a variety of field trip opportunities as a team as well as on focused expeditions. The expeditions will vary on teams based on student interest and teacher training. All 6th graders will have the opportunity to attend Camp Colton for four days and three nights. Camp Colton is a long-standing tradition in Flagstaff Unified School District. We encourage every sixth grader to attend.
Honors classes in all four core subject areas will be offered at each grade level. Students may sign up based on their interests. Classroom teachers may also make recommendations based on their experience with the student. Honors classes are offered in all four core subjects: English, math, science and social studies.
We offer a wide array of elective opportunities that focus on college and career readiness standards. Elective classes include, physical education, yearbook, foods, Spanish, computer coding, and computer technology. In addition, we have a fine arts magnet that includes all levels of band, beginning and advanced orchestra, choir, and theater.
